Years in Circulation: 1916-1947ish
Other Names: liberty coins, silver half dollar
Famous: Very; the Walking Liberty half dollar is considered to be the most beautifully designed coin in minting history and there are enough mintings to keep any collector drooling.
Value as of October 2011: Anywhere between $9.00 and up to around $6000, depending on rarity of a given minting.
The Walking Liberty Half Dollar was cast in 1916 to replace the Barber half dollar. What’s interesting about this is that reason for the replacement was a complete misunderstanding; the Minting Director, new to his job, thought that coins were supposed to be minted with new designs every 25 years and so commissioned a new, more compelling design. The Walking liberty silver half dollar didn’t disappoint; this coin features the Lady of Liberty walking on one side and a beautiful ¾ profile of an eagle on the other side. It is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful coins in American history. This coin was designed by Adolph A. Weinman.

Like most coins of this age, the Walking Liberty half dollar is composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, making it fairly sturdy. However, it can still be hard to get excellent quality coins because they were so widely circulated and well used. Excellent quality coins sell for far greater value than the good condition coins since the beautiful design is worth more money to collectors and buyers.
This series of Liberty coins has a wide range of value, depending on where it was minted and when. There are four mints, denoted by Mint Marks-O for New Orleans, D for Denver, S for San Francisco and unmarked for Philadelphia. Within each of these, are the years when they were minted. The most valuable ones include the 1921 Philadelphia (unmarked) at up to $6,000; the 1916-S at up to $4000 and the 1921-D at up to $5000. Basically, the smaller the minting, the more each coin is worth on the seller’s market. While there are no famous mintings, unlike the Barber series, the Walking Liberty coin is generally famous because they are so lovely to look at.
If you are interested in coin collecting, at least one Walking Liberty half dollar is worth adding to your collection. If nothing else, its beauty is well worth adding to your stash, but it can also be used as a way to safe-house some cash. If you add this coin to your collection; you won’t regret it!
