Silver Coins

Using Silver Coins for Investing (and Collecting!)

Silver coins are both a wonderful collector’s item and a great way to invest in a manner that is largely stable. Although you may be very familiar with the idea of collecting silver coins and perhaps selling one or two rare ones as needed, the idea of investing in silver coins is a relatively new one. Savvy traders will bounce between silver and gold because where one falls, the other rises and silver coins are a relatively easy way to keep track of your investments.

Silver coins are relatively new on the investor’s market because they were still used in regular circulation up until the 1970s; in fact, the only reason why the coins were no longer used was because the price of silver became more than the worth of the coin they were made into! As a result, investing in coins is still new, but it is becoming a good way to get into the silver market.

Today, buying silver coins is now being promoted as a way to protect against a bank meltdown because the silver in them will always be a valuable commodity whereas paper money would simply turn into toilet paper. (Facetious? Well maybe, but many investors say why risk it?) Investors turning to silver coins do it at least in part out of fear of a financial meltdown in the country where they live, such as what happened in Argentina and Paraguay where only those who invested in silver and gold were protected. This is known as the Survival Investment.

Other people do Rare Silver Coin investments. This is done when investors choose to buy and sell rare coins, such as the Morgan Silver coins which are considered rare because they were only minted over a roughly 50 year period in five different sites, each site with their own silver coin. Amateur investors can get common Morgan silver coins which are worth slightly less than dollar value while serious investors compete to collect the supremely rare Morgan silver coins which have things like defects, rare faces or other things. Rare silver coin investments can not only pay off big later (when people are scrabbling to collect them), but also fulfill the Collector’s Itch which many people have.

Finally of course, some investors prefer to invest in silver as part of their hedge portfolio (that is, a barricade for some of your money to stay behind even in a volatile market) and like silver coins because they are Tangible. This is more of a personal preference than anything practical, but many people like the idea of a small pile of silver coins in their name somewhere in the world! It speaks to many peoples’ inner desires to go diving into a pool of gold (or simply sift through silver coins). You’d probably never see the coins, but it is fun to think about anyway!

You can go through a certified silver coin seller or trader, an exchange traded fund, mining company or simply in a bank which trades in silver coins. If you are new to silver coins, it’s important to go through someone certified to trade in silver coins or you could end up being cheated. With the right research though, you can start adding the more stable silver to your portfolio and also have the joy of collecting coins. Enjoy investing in silver coins, one of the newer and faster growing investments around!
